My series, „Structures of Beauty“ delves deeper into the heart of what originally attracted me to the geisha quarters (hanamachi), the aesthetic of the traditional Kyoto townhouses known as kyō-machiya. This series captures the essence of what I find so captivating in these buildings: the perfect proportions, the beautiful colors and the celebration of natural materials like wood and stone.
One of the key concepts that I wanted to convey in this series was the idea of wabi-sabi, which is reflected in the perfect imperfection of the kyō-machiya’s design. The proportions and materials used in the construction of these buildings create a sense of simplicity and naturalness that is deeply rooted in the Japanese aesthetic.
My goal for this series was a personal one, I wanted to capture what I consider to be the most beautiful design in the world and surround myself with it in my own home. Having large prints of this series on my walls gives me the opportunity to experience this aesthetic in my daily life. The series Structures of Beauty is a celebration of the beauty of the kyō-machiya architecture, the perfect proportions, and the natural materials, which all together embody the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
