My second photography series, „Moments of Beauty II,” focusses on the liveliness and warm energy of Kyoto’s geisha quarters, the Hanamachi.
While “Hanamachi I – Moments of Beauty“ shows fleeting moments that seem to be fallen out of time, “Moments of Beauty II – “ takes place in the here and now, showing joyful moments in vibrant colors.
The series is centered around spontaneous encounters with maiko (apprentice geisha) in the streets of Gion, highlighting the colors and intricate details of their attire. Seeing a maiko is in full attire is like watching a living painting, a true work of art. From the traditional hairstyle to the intricate patterns and symbols on their clothing, every aspect of their appearance is a reflection of perfection.
One of the defining features of a maiko is their traditional hairstyle, which is difficult to create and maintain for several days. This makes it easy to spot a maiko even when they are not dressed in full attire. During the day, they can be seen walking around the hanamachi wearing traditional clothing such as a kimono or yukata, but still maintaining their complicated hairstyle. Another way to tell them apart from geiko is by the way they wear the obi, with maiko wearing it hanging down to their feet while geiko wear it in the traditional style.
The series captures the beauty and elegance of the hanamachi and the daily life of the geisha in a new way, inviting the viewer to see the beauty in the details.
